An Adventure Exploration Game of the Underlying Situations in Pet Adoption for Rescue Shelters

Fur Choice: Adopt, Don’t Shop!
The pandemic sparked a surge in pet ownership. People turned to pets for companionship during isolation. However, this boom also fueled unethical breeding and shelter overpopulation. Many owners sadly abandon pets, straining rescue shelters. This is where Fur Choice comes in.
Our project reveals harsh realities within pet shelters. These include overpopulation, illegal puppy mill distribution, and returned adoptions. We aim to engage the public and potential adopters. We do this through a powerful gamified approach. This unique game helps spread the vital “Adopt, Don’t Shop” advocacy of shelters.
Your Compassionate Journey
We conducted extensive research and development for this game. Then, we partnered with two local rescue shelters: Biyaya Animal Care and Animal Kingdom Foundation. Together, we built this experience using the Unity Game Engine. This immersive journey opens your eyes to the true costs of irresponsible pet choices.
To evaluate its effectiveness, we surveyed 30 respondents. They tested our Alpha demo. The results were clear: Fur Choice met ISO 25010 requirements. It showed strong potential as an engaging and effective advocacy tool. Moreover, it promotes “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” It supports rescue shelters in their mission. These shelters work tirelessly to get rescued pets into safe and loving homes.
Key Game Features
This game includes a detailed pet care management minigame. Here, you’ll learn pet ownership responsibilities firsthand. NPC interactions cover real-life pet welfare topics, providing crucial information. Furthermore, persuasions from non-advocate NPCs highlight common misconceptions. This challenges players to think critically. Consequently, these elements make Fur Choice a suitable medium for rescue shelters and their advocacy.
We are committed to continuous improvement for this project. Researchers acknowledged areas for enhancement. For example, we plan ongoing updates, bug fixes, and expanded NPC dialogue.
